Race, Ethnicity, And Ethnicity - 1838 Words

Most people in our society believe the common misconception that race and ethnicity are synonymous. Race and ethnicity are related, but are not equivalent. Race by definition means â€Å"a socially constructed category of people who share a biologically transmitted trait that members of society consider important† (Macionis 296). Ethnicity by definition means â€Å"a shared cultural heritage† (Macionis 298). In shorter terms, race is social physical appearance, while ethnicity is the cultural aspect. Social conflation of these two terms is important to me because society often mistakes ethnicity and race for the other or just considers it as one. This is relevant to me because I have dealt with this issue has come up quite a few times in my life. Racially and socially, I appear to be a â€Å"White† or â€Å"Caucasian† female, but ethnically I am Mexican and this is relevant because of the confusion between Race and Ethnicity people do not understand or are confused. People usually are a bit confused or shocked when they hear this. Their response is always somewhere along the lines of â€Å"You can’t be Mexican. You’re white.† or â€Å"But you’re white.† I may not â€Å"look† Mexican because I do not have dark hair or skin, but I am Mexican: my mother is from Mexico, and we visit when we get the opportunity, which is maybe once every year. I am familiar with the Mexican culture and I am able to speak somewhat decent Spanish.
